Defense Secretary Support Bataan Nuclear Power Plant Revival

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana support the proposed revival of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant as its benefits the country.

“Wala naman ako nakikita dahil it will just be revived to generate electricity. Hindi naman tayo siguro capable to develop our own nuclear bomb, pero hindi naman siguro yung purpose nun,” Secretary Delfin Lorenzana Lorenzana said in a media briefing in Malacanang.

Constructed under former President Ferdinand Marcos, the Bataan Nuclear Power plant is the country’s first and only nuclear facility. The plant never opened due to issues regarding corruption and safety.

The safety standards, international standards are much, much higher than the standards on which the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant was built. So I think it’s not possible at all, that the Bataan plant was beyond revival, where technology in the plant was absolutely outdated.

The Bataan plant took ten years to build and was expected to provide 623 megawatts of energy. Unfortunately, it is now not used that cost government funds up to P50 million a year for its maintenance.
