In 2019, the Philippine Navy welcomed two Jose Rizal-class frigates, namely the BRP Jose Rizal and BRP Antonio Luna, marking a milestone in the Philippine Navy Modernization Horizon 1 program. These state-of-the-art vessels symbolize the Philippines’ commitment to upgrading its naval forces to meet modern challenges effectively.
As a gesture of gratitude and further collaboration, South Korea also contributed a Pohang-class corvette named ROKS Chungju, now proudly known as the BRP Conrado Yap (PS-39). Fast forward to May 2023, the Philippine News Agency reported that two more Pohang-class corvettes are expected to be provided from South Korea.
